Ocasio-Cortez to Vogue: ‘It’s not like I grew up reading Noam Chomsky’

October 16, 2018
Hi friends, I’ve missed you. It’s been a helluva few weeks, to say the least. I hope you're taking care. Some of you have been getting this newsletter for almost a year, and I've loved sending it — but I need some help (note below!).
This week, Vogue published a profile of Democratic candidate Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, photographed by none other than Annie Leibovitz. In extremely modern fashion, we reach graf 15 without mention of Ocasio-Cortez’s aesthetic, beyond a canary-yellow moleskin.
“I wasn’t going to tell you what Ocasio-Cortez is wearing—because it’s 2018—but then I learn a by-product of her becoming a national story is that she’s caught flak for, of all things, repeating outfits," writes Irina Aleksander.
The piece takes us from The Daily Show to a Michigan rally, giving us a clearer picture of where Ocasio-Cortez came from, what issues she's running on, and who her progressive peers are. The politics of women’s magazines is a subject we care about deeply, and the whole thing is worth reading.

Some final news on Clipped: Danielle started a new job, and will be stepping away from Clipped to focus on other work. She’ll be cheering on the newsletter from the sidelines though and has enjoyed every moment critiquing women’s media and meeting all of you powerhouses.
That said, I’m interested in collaborating with someone on the newsletter, and even rethinking how we do it. Want to get involved somehow, or just talk more? Email me at clippedmags@gmail.com, or forward to someone who you think might be a good fit.
Talk soon,
Natalie
